As I have said before, I am the breed contact for Australian Shepherds and Cavaliers
for our all-breed club. When I get calls from individuals looking for a Cavalier, the
biggest concerns are health-most are aware of the heart issues, and what the dog looks
like. Seems no one wants to spend big bucks on an ugly dog that will die in a few
years! I can't give these people recommendations on breeders because the health
approaches vary so much. Not that any are wrong, just different. Some produce hard
copy, some do not. Some breeders go by age of ancestors, age of parents etc. I give
prospective buyers suggestions of questions and tell them they have to feel
comfortable with the breeder they select. I also do not believe any breeder is above
answering any question a prospective buyer may ask-no matter what they think their
reputation is.

What should a puppy buyer expect from a reputable breeder? Should they expect to see
hard copy of health clearances on several generations of dogs? Should they expect
parents to be over a certain age? Should they expect a contract with some health
guarantees?
