I have experience with early altering in Australian Shepherds, and would
recommend you proceed slowly before deciding to do this with pups. I had pet
pups from my first litter of Aussies altered at 8 weeks as it seemed like the
perfect solution. The pups that were done all grew considerably taller (as
in 2-3 inches) than their littermates or than we expected based on their
parents and grandparents. I understand that in some breeds any excessive
growth is negligible, and I have no idea how it works with Cavaliers, but I
would be cautious.
