Hmmm - coming late to the conversation, and probably missing a few of the posts, but I
do wonder how one can breed by genotype, since it seems to
be pretty much impossible to know all the genes in a given dog's makeup. On the other
hand, every breed in the world, warts and all, was developed
basically by breeding phenotype...and in some cases, with a care to working ability.
As for breeding scientifically (that is, trying to do it genotypically) I've yet
to hear of a successful breeder. E.g., what has Dr. Padgett
bred...??? Of course, it is probably a little easier to say you're breeding
genotypically when the breed in question has very, very little
variation in phenotype. But unless someone is very busy keeping track of every little
gene, generation after generation, I don't believe it is
possible. Once a particular gene is isolated, of course, one can certainly base a
breeding program on that one gene...
