Hmm - Kim, we can go to dinner anytime you're around this way (northern Virginia). I
remember Charlie well.
As far as Ann's comment that

I can't imagine why you would think that the dog world began in 1970.
CH Lance of Fran-Jo was American Grand Victor in 1967, after having been a Select in
1966. He was also a Canadian Grand Victor -- and he did have an OFA number... GS-401.
He was not a closely line-bred dog. He came along at a time when GSD's were not as
angulated as they are now, and is probably more than any other GSD responsible for the
extreme sloping toplines, long, sweeping stifles, and breathtaking side gait that we
Americans so desire now. I remember seeing adverts for dogs in
the GSD Review a few years later advertising litters that were "12 times Lance," etc.
No, not everything he produced was great...but he is generally credited with having
changed the breed in this country.
Janet has already spoken about the Bratt...
From the point of view of some of us who have been around a while, in a discussion
of influential dogs (of which there are seriously very few, at least not in the same
class as Lance, Charlie, and Bratt), raising a question about their OFA scores is sort
of missing the point.
When and if ever anyone can name a dog who was tested to pieces and improved the
health of his breed, then post it here, please; conversely, if you can name a dog who
actually HARMED the health of his breed (as I can, but as I won't), please post that,
too. Otherwise, I think it rather ignorant to raise health issues when talking about
dogs who had a major influence on their breeds. It stands to reason that no dog is
perfect...if people didn't like the health of the dogs they got
from these truly influential dogs, the dogs would not have become influential.
