It was explained to me that a bitch with microplasma could not carry a

How was she diagnosed? Jo Ann Carvill >>
Hi Jo Ann,
This is what happened. I had agreed to whelp the litter but was called on
her 54th day by Chris and told that her Aunt had died in Chicago and she had
to go to the funeral. I said I would take her but wanted an x-ray. The
x-ray showed 2 puppies. Emily came to me on her 56th day. The morning of
her 57th day I came downstairs and saw that Emily had peed twice in my family
room. On closer examination I saw a dark green discharge in the middle. I
called Anne Robins and said that I suspected she was aborting the puppies.
Anne agreed and said that there was nothing I could do but suggested I check
with my vet (I trust Anne's judgment more) and he agreed. I put her in a
crate to keep her quiet and a few hours later I noticed a dark "blob" in
front of her. It was a mummified fetus that weighed 1.3 ounces. About an
hour later we were outside and she dropped another one, even smaller so I did
not weigh it. Those were the 2 puppies on the x-ray - so I made an appt with
my vet to get her checked out the next day and get some antibiotics. That
night I did not want to leave her downstairs so I brought her into my bedroom
in a crate. She woke me at 5 am and I asked her if she wanted to go out. A
few of my other dogs followed us downstairs and she seemed fine so I left
them all downstairs for a few hours while I went back to sleep. Later in the
day went to the vet and everything was fine and early that evening Chris
returned and picked her up.
In the meantime, Mark came home and sat in his recliner in the bedroom and
read the paper waiting for me to come back from the office. When I did we
went out to dinner. When we returned I made dinner for my dogs and called
them....Nellie and Phoebe were not around. I asked Mark to find them and he
came back to tell me there was a dead puppy in the middle of the bedroom
floor....right in front of the chair he had been sitting in (it was not there
previously). Obviously either Nellie or Phoebe found the puppy in Emily's
crate and carried it out and cleaned it off. That puppy looked perfectly
formed and weighed 3.5 ounces. At that point I knew that Emily had woken me
when she delivered that puppy but unfortunately thought nothing of leaving
her behind. Since it was dark in the room I did not see anything.
The next day I called Anne again to tell her what had happened and asked what
Chris should do to make sure this did not happen again. She told me that
either the fetus should be examined or a culture from Emily must be done
while she is still discharging...and sent to Cornell with specific
instructions on what to look for. The results came back a week or so later
that she was "loaded with microplasm."
My concern then was for my dogs. They had all walked through or sniffed the
spot Emily had peed and either Nellie or Phoebe or both had cleaned off her
baby (who I suspected I might have been able to save if I had known it was
there.)
My next step was to have 2 of my dogs tested...one male and one female. I
had my vet do checks on Nellie and Keeper, both of whom turned up negative
for microplasma. However, he suggested that it is so highly contagious I
could treat all of them with Dicurel (I did press him to do something rather
than take a chance.)
To answer your question about the ability to carry to full term - it is my
"inexperienced opinion" that the last puppy was small, but could have
survived if I had an opportunity to work on it.
Another long answer to a short question...
Have a happy holiday. Regards to Peter and your wonderful children.
Phyllis
