I hate to throw cold water on anybody (well, no, I really don't)...but the reason
the male determines the sex (so to speak) is because only he can pass on the Y
chromosome.
The theory about certain health problems being linked to males is because there are
certain genes that go with the Y chromosome and not with the X...
sort of what Pat said but not exactly.
    And, Katy...something went haywire somewhere, because for the past 40+ years,
everyone I've ever known has always said you get more males by breeding early and
more females by breeding late.......precisely because the male producing sperm are
quicker and faster but weaker...if you breed late enough supposedly the Y's are
pretty much outta there.
         Anyway, it doesn't matter so long as the puppies are all healthy.....
