Our repro vet taught me this technique and it has worked well for all my puppies. You do it no sooner than 72 hours after delivery to allow the newborn's clotting mechanisms to kick in. You will need a 5.5 inch curved surgical clamp, which is often called a "mosquito" clamp because it is relatively small. You will also need surgical glue which is available through most of vet catalogues. You use the curve of the clamp, turned toward the foot to work as far under the little dew claw as you can get it. Then, when it is well under the dew claw, you simply close the clamp. The dew claw is cut off at that point and all you need to do is use your thumb nail to scrape it off the clamp. The edges of the skin are also sealed together by the clamp. Then you hold the clamp in place for about 45-60 seconds to allow the clotting mechanisms to work and then you carefully remove the clamp. Then you just drop a couple of drops of surgical glue over the little place where the claw was and blow it dry for a few seconds. The glue comes off in about 7 days and it never leaves a scar. You will often complete the entire operation and never see a drop of blood. Myra Savant
