Sorry, I should have had all this in one post...I have several Cavaliers with
dewclaws behind. If I saw them when the babies were born I'd have removed those,
but they were so tiny I missed them. I don't remove them later, either. They are
high up and not likely to tear, and again, not visible at all...of course the ones
my dogs have are miniscule. It does seem to run in lines, and in the case here, a
line I'm very proud to own and have access to.
My Corgis often produced rear dewclaws...they were easier to see and I removed
those, as I removed the front dewclaws and the tails.....all early on.
When I lost a terrier in a car accident, the one true identifying feature I
could give the shelter manager when he was turned in a few weeks later was "he has
dewclaws behind," so I don't worry about them anymore...I think they are a lucky
sign and often seem to be associated with beautiful quality.
