I believe this is called "backmassing" and when involved in Schutzhund 20+
years ago found that this was a popular breeding approach with German dogs,
Shepherds, Dobermans, etc.  That way a prepotent sire's attributes can be
carried down many generations. Of course, defects can come out too. The
pedigree of any outstanding German import that I reviewed was the result of
this breeding practice.
