I think that dew claws must vary from dog to dog or breed to breed. Madeleine had both front and back dew claws. The back ones looked like they were hanging by a thread and would get stuck or ripped out easily. There is no way she could have used them for anything (judging by how they looked to me). The vet said he could easily snip them off during her spay. Her front ones looked more like part of her whole paw area, and he would not remove them. He said that was major at that point and would be painful to her. I just am very dilligent about keeping them trimmed. Do some dogs have rear dew claws that are *not* just hanging by a thread?
