I have always been of the opinion that a kennels strength is in it's bitches and not necessarily it's dogs. I have also been told that it can take 10 generations before a fault such as a luxating patella can come forward again, food for thought when you consider how many bitches can possibly be produced over those 10 generations who would all be carriers of the faulty gene!
I guess the keyword here is research!! Check those pedigree's again and again, dig and delve into every single one of those dogs in the pedigree and be totally aware of what exactly MIGHT come forward in your litter!
