Most veterinarians now agree that coronavirus vaccine is unnecessary. If illness does occur it is usually in puppies less than 8 weeks of age, and is limited and usually mild. The safety and efficacy of giardia vaccine is unknown. Bordetella vaccine provides incomplete and short-term protection against a bacterial form of kennel cough. However, there are many other causes of kennel cough which are not covered by bordetella vaccine. Parainfluenza virus vaccine is a component of all multi-component vaccines that contain distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus. Therefore, it is currently given to every dog that receives the core vaccines. Parainfluenza is one of the main causes of kennel cough. Lyme vaccine should be used only in areas where Lyme Disease is endemic. Immunity against Lyme Disease is not complete and even if a dog contracts the disease it responds well to antibiotic treatment. Some dogs do experience adverse reactions to vaccines. These may occur within minutes to days following vaccination and most reactions are immune mediated. Breeds at increased risk include miniature Dachshunds, West Highland White Terriers, Old English Sheepdogs, Akitas, Weimaraners and those with coat color dilutions. A test is being developed which will measure distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus antibody. When that test becomes available and proven accurate it may be possible to reduce the number of multiple puppy vaccinations and determine specifically when an adult dog needs revaccination. Until that time, current titer tests are unreliable and expensive and should not be relied upon as sufficient to suspend vaccinations, especially for puppies. Studies into several types of cancer and the work to discover the genes that trigger the uncontrolled growth of cells, which is what cancer is, are being conducted at various facilities throughout the United States and in England.
