It used to be that the breeding of purebred dogs was an undertaking
only to be taken very seriously, and required a fair amount
of resources to do it well.  Only people who had a substantial personal
background (usually passed down from several generations of people who
did this for a living, and whose lives revolved around testing the
products of their breeding programs both in the field and in the breed
ring), were employed as kennel managers.  Because there were not a huge
number of dogs being bred, and transportation, AI, etc., were not
available, successful breeding programs required that the kennels and
breeding programs were fairly large.  This required a substantial
investment in resources, time, energy, passion, and commitment,  let
alone understanding of the breed standard and ability to gather the most
knowledgeable dog folk to contribute to improving a breeding program.
Breeding excellent dogs has never been a substantial revenue generating
activity, at least not for the majority, and not before now.
