I use your method.  The posed ones always look so, well,..Posed!  I find
using a zoom lens helps.  Then you can be far away from the dog and the dog
can do his thing with him noticing that he is being watched.  Of course you
end up with the imprint of the camera on around your eye for a couple hours
and you need to develop quick focus skills if your camera doesn't have an
automatic focus.
