Try to get things in focus using a cardboard box before getting the dog to sit there while you focus. You might try contacting your local camera shop and learning about hyperfocus which is a great thing to learn. I have done a lot of photos of dogs and the best are the shots of them in action showing the best things they do. Or :) practice on the cat once you get the cat thing down pat the dog will be so easy you will wonder why you didn't do it first:>).
