Robyn, I understand totally what you are saying and I've always tried to
stick to issues instead of personalities. Of course, I am not perfect and
have said things in the past that I regret, but I do try to stick to the
idea side of things. I've had my share of being jumped on, just as you
mentioned, but I'm not about to allow what another person writes to or about
me to stop me from enjoying the list fully. I thoroughly enjoy the threads
where the list members explore ideas and issues. Some really useful remedies
and knowledge have come my way from reading the thoughts and actions of
others. I seldom accept anything without questioning why.

I have always marveled at is how many of our beliefs most people accept
without question. These beliefs form a subjective reality that can influence
how we perceive the world. This was demonstrated by the differing opinions
that Michael and I had concerning the American Cocker fancy. We saw the same
fancy in completely different ways due to our individual subjective
realities. I remembered a world where I was able to call a stranger and buy
a female with full registration or arrange stud service for one of my girls
and I was the one doing the interrogation, not the other breeder. Michael's
experience was similar to what we have now in the Cavalier world. I never
experienced the situation as she did, but I never called anyone on the West
Coast, and my experience with the really big name breeders were ones in the
South and a few in the Midwest. Maybe I was lucky, but I was never refused
or treated with suspicion. When I realized the impasse in our discussion, I
politely ended the thread. I like Michael and have always admired her
expertise in breeding beautiful animals of all kinds as well as the artistic
abilities with photography and drawing.

Sometimes there is an underlying meaning or animosity that colors the
comments made by breeders. The sparring between two can actually be because
of things that are not list related and that can be a pain to deal with. You
won't find some of these things on a moderated list, but then there is
something lost when the spontaneity is gone.

All the best,
Susan Cochran

> Hi, All--
> I've been offline for a time, and upon reading about ten days' worth of
posts to the lists I'd like to comment on the amount of acrimony I saw. I'm
not speaking of spirited discussion and differing points of view; I digested
a few examples of what I have to call thinly-disguised vitriol.
> Susan Cochran wrote regarding the list: "I know the names of the people
who post, but am startled when approached by one of the many list members
who lurk instead of perticipate. I don't know them, but they feel that they
know me. BTW, I don't mind this but do wish that others would speak
up--although it does take a sturdy suit of armor at times, LOL." With all
due respect to Susan, this immediately brought to mind an incident a year or
so ago where a very respected UK breeder, who had tons to offer to the
readers of this list (I'm not connected to this person in any way, nor do I
have any of their dogs), wrote a well-meaning post in response to a question
and was so roundly set upon that s/he hasn't posted since. Like many, s/he
has forsaken that suit of armor, and the list, outright. This to me is a
real shame. I am certain that there are others who post infrequently (if at
all) for the same reason.

abuse of it, or one another.
