I believe that at the time, it was their preference to wait until the bitch was 5 and heart clear with parents clear at 5, except they made a compromise since breeding a bitch for the first time at 5 could make whelping difficult, and breeders less likely to follow this suggestion, etc. Therefore, the earliest a bitch could be bred would be 21/2. They recommended using a stud 5 years old or older because the data showed males on average are affected by age 5 with MVD and for females, the average age was 9. Their preference was to choose an older dog with parents that are clear at 5 or longer to push back the age this disease shows up in cavaliers. You are correct, we are not limited to dogs that are clear at age 5; we can use 21/2 year old dogs if their parents were heart clear at 5 years of age. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
