Hi Stephanie,
Yes, it was lovely seeing so many nice dogs at the Garden and Andreas looked
as fantastic as he did last year (which I hadn't thought possible.) IMHO I
don't see how the Judge could have made a better choice.
Aside from that, I am still bruised and bleeding from the beating I took from
some of the exhibitors that took exception to some of the posting on this
list regarding professional handlers. I know that many of the accusations
were for things I had not said. It seems that if I agreed with someone about
one statement in their post such as wishing the judges would judge the dogs
and not the person at the end of the lead I was accused of saying that all
professional handlers cared only about the money and that I thought they
should turn clients down with dogs that were not worthy. Absolutely not. If
I had expressed an opinion, which I don't believe I did, (but I am sure some
of you will search the archives to check it out) I would have said it is the
owner who has the responsibility to see that the best representatives of the
breed are exhibited. If there was someone who suggested that the
professional handlers should turn down clients just to help the breed...I
sure don't remember reading that, nor would I agree with the concept.
Handlers have their place in the show ring and I see no reason why the
Cavaliers should be different than other breeds? (But no kneeling or
stacking, please.) However, if anyone cares how I feel I would tell them
that I would "prefer" that it be limited to the Specials and not to the class
dogs. (I don't mean there should be a rule against it. I am just expressing
my wish to see owners in the classes.) We are not going to change the dog
world. If someone has the desire to have their dog in the top rankings of
the breed it would be impossible to have a job and family and campaign a dog
every weekend. But I assume that reasonably nice dogs would be among the
majority in that catagory.
During this beating I was asked to defend the CKCSC as well as those that
judge in Canada. I was ridiculed about preferring a system of showing dogs
in venues other than the AKC where we have no specials classes and all dogs
have to beat champions in addition to non-champions in order to gain the
title of Champion. I was asked whether or not I thought that when a Judge
walked into the ring in the CKCSC they did or did not know who Nellie was or
some other dogs who have gained some notoriety? I was asked whether judges
knew who Kevan or Brian were when judging in England? I was asked whether or
not exhibitors should be allowed to associate with judges socially since we
obviously object to professional handlers who spend weekends with the Judges.
(I will answer that the same way I did when I defended the seminar in
Arizona to which I will not be attending. It is one thing when Judges mingle
with ALL the exhibitors in a social setting and another when a few exhibitors
or pro handlers practically live with the judges every weekend.)
I have more to say but have to go meet my husband for dinner...it is almost
9pm. I hope that those otherwise very nice individuals will in the future
refrain from making one person responsible for the opinions of many other
listmembers. As nice as they were, I was definitely being badgered and did
not find it enjoyable.
Now, to open up another can of worms, again.... I do want to say that I did
leave the Garden with a renewed resolve to get the Board of the CKCSC "off
their butts" and do something about this issue of using AKC only dogs. There
is absolutely no valid reason to delay this any further. Most of the
arguments I have heard against opening up our "gene pool" ???? don't hold up.
I saw many lovely Cavaliers with beautiful pedigrees and we should all be
working together to keep the Cavalier looking they way they were meant to
look. We, the members of the CKCSC, should be ashamed of ourselves for
letting the Board delay this decision from meeting to meeting to
meeting......and nothing ever happens.
