Being halfway through a Master Gardener course and already got the turf
(lawn) class under my belt, my best advice is to contact the county
extension agent in her area. He will probably recommend a soil test to
determine what nutrients are lacking in the soil, as well as the type of
soil. The next thing is the type of grass, as fertilizing times, amounts,
and type can vary according to grass type. We have not discussed a lot of
organic methods in the course :o( , so I can't really help there. But once
you have the soil test results and grass type, I'm sure he can either find
some information or refer her to someone that could help.
Personally, it doesn't matter if I have grass or weeds.........the dogs will
pee no matter what.
