We use products from www.gardensalive.com for fertilizer, weed prevention, etc. I believe their version of "weed and feed" is based on corn meal. WE have had good results on the lawn and never noticed any side effects on the boys. We try very hard to use only organic products on our lawn and garden but our neighbors spray on so many chemicals I have no idea if it does any good.
