Some years ago one of my Cavaliers developed this problem. My regular vet
was out of town and the vet I went to referred me to the vet school after
Phinny failed the blink response test.

There they diagnosed the facial nerve paralysis and wanted me to bring him
back for a scan. When I talked to my regular vet he told me that about 60
percent of all cases were idiopathic, and that in Phinny's case the facial
nerve paralysis might well have been caused by a throat infection he had
had very recently (splinter in the throat). He also told me that many
cases resolve on their own. I had already seen a slight improvement in
Phin so we decided to hold off on the $800 scan. It took about 2 months,
but he did recover 100%.

We did put liquid tears in eyes several times a day to prevent drying and
irritation of the cornea.

medication and a low dosage of prednisone.
