Hi David, and welcome to to the list. Since others have addressed your
question about the reverse sneeze, I'll just say a word about the use of
cortisone for allergies. Your dog is very young and may have had only one
shot; I'm raising a cautionary flag very early, because I wish I had known
long ago what I know now. Your vet is right that paw-licking is a classic
sign of allergies (usually dietary, though not always), but cortisone only
addresses the symptom, not the cause. It's a wonder-drug because it's so
quickly effective, but for this very reason it can be over-prescribed.
Repeated doses over the course of years is often damaging (to kidneys,
adrenal glands, etc.). When cortisone wears off, the symptom usually
returns, sometimes worse than before. Years ago I had a dog whose allergies
resulted in paw-licking which was stopped by cortisone. We went through this
cycle for years; I just depended on my well-intentioned vet, and this was
long before before I learned anything about canine nutrition. I was feeding
what I thought was the best (commercial) dog food; today there are much
healthier choices on the market. Now that your dog isn't licking his paws
so much, please consider taking advantage of this period of "blessed relief"
to reevaluate his food. This list can be helpful, and there's another list
(some of its members are on this list too) called Cavaliers Naturally
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CavaliersNaturally . Also, The Whole Dog
Journal http://www.whole-dog-journal.com publishes its ratings of commercial
dog foods (canned and dry) every year or two. I think it's worth
subscribing to, but as I recall you can also find posts referring to its
results, in the archives of one or both of these e-lists.
Best of luck to you and your Cavaliers!
        Alida

<<< Oh...before he was also licking
his paws a lot. And the cortisone shot did actually seem to cause that
to stop. >>>
