i agree that temperament is a big issue as it is with most, but excessive
barking is not necessarily hereditary in breeds other than herding breeds.
sometimes it is a learned behavior (and being that your dogs live with a
sheltie, well........)  it can also be just an idiosyncrasy of that
particular dog.  i think removing a barker who is otherwise a healthy typey
dog from a breeding program is like throwing the baby out with the bath
water, towels, clean diaper and all. <G>
