Leanne, Shushing is exactly what I started doing when my Cavalier puppy barks. My breeder thinks it is hereditary too as the pups mother is a barker. But she only barks (now), who knows about later, when she wants something my Norfolk Terrier has. The funny part is that the terrier drops the item and lets her have it. I am not yelling NO at her which I would have done ordinarily as my obedience teacher has told us that yelling back is actually incouraging her barking--kinda like talking to her--so I am shushing her when she barks like I did my children with my finger in front of my pursed lips. She stops barking and looks at me and under her breath says, "Humph." Try it.
