I have a 9 mo. puppy dog that has been to the vet 3x for anal sac problems; at 6 mo, 8 mo and 9 mo. We have another appt for 10 mo. This puppy has been on a BARF diet since he came home with me at 11 weeks. My vet is a holistic vet and she says that raw food diets do not necessarily prevent this problem from occurring. In my pup's case, his anal glands are oddly shaped (long and flat, rather than round) and the opening is very small, making it impossible for me to manually express them externally. She is hopeful that regular veterinary (internal) expressing of glands will prevent buildup of plugs and help widen the opening. If all goes well for the next appt., she hopes that I will be able to manually express them externally. Poor baby. It's got to be very unpleasant for him.
