Pam, I would take her to the vet who had no trouble expressing them before and get another opinion. Anal gland surgery is tricky, and doing something the tiniest bit wrong could result in incontinence. I did not have Madeleine's done until I started going to a vet that does it with laser surgery. She does literally thousands of them, and she is Board Certified. I believe I would be scared to death to have a vet do it that did not do this almost daily.
Other vets had suggested to me that I should have it done, and I never would. If she's 10 years old and has never had a problem, and isn't scooting, I would not just jump into having it done. If they do rupture, it might be painful, but I don't think I would do it just because they *might* rupture. Just like you with your girl, I couldn't have handled it if something had happened to Madeleine during the surgery. Since anal gland surgery is elective, I would suggest not doing it now.
