I hope you all don't mind a newbie jumping in on this
AKC conversation. I just spent three days at the
shows in Ft. Worth this past weekend. Before this,
I'd been to one AKC show and one Club show, each time
as an observer. The AKC show was last November, so I
really didn't have much of an eye for anything (not
that I do now either LOL). The Club show was in
Columbus, so was more recent. I thought the cavaliers
at the Club show were gorgeous. I used my time
watching to try to pick up on differences in structure
and movement. I was even lucky enough to sit next to
a couple from the UK who gave me an informed running
commentary -- one of the best "lessons" in cavaliers
I've ever had!

So, then there were these three days in Texas. There
were some nice looking cavaliers, but in general, I
was struck at how "different" some of the entries
looked. One blenheim entry was almost entirely white,
with only one marking on the show side and "blonde"
versus chestnut coloring on ears. Another blenheim
was not heavily marked, but had *lots* of ticking all
over the body. A third cavalier had *no* stop, not a
cavalier head as far as I could tell. As I remembered
the beautiful heads and markings of the blenheims I
saw in Columbus, I found myself wondering if I was
seeing a difference in the quality of cavaliers in AKC
versus CKCSC? If that is the case, it still doesn't
make sense to me that Club breeders would place "show"
potential cavs for AKC shows that they wouldn't mind
seeing at a Club show. Am I making sense here? I
guess as a newcomer, I am expecting to see cavaliers
that first exhibit *type* at an AKC show. Then
judging is on structure and movement? But then maybe
I was spoiled by all of the beautiful cavs in
Columbus. Or, maybe I just have a *lot* more to
learn.

It just doesn't make sense to me to see "cavaliers" in
the AKC ring that don't really look anything like the
beautiful dogs I've seen, and then complain that
judges don't know *type*. How will they ever begin to
consistently recognize *type* when exhibitors aren't
bringing typey cavs to the ring? And, how will
newbies like me ever know better about bringing a
nontypey cavalier to the ring if a breeder sells
something like this as a show-potential cavalier?

Set me straight please!
