I had always given mine their rabies faithfully every year as required by
law in Tennessee. My feeling was that if by some remote chance, one of them
bit someone, they could take my dogs away from me and quarantine them if
they were not up to date on their vaccines. Someone told me not long ago
(maybe on this list?) that they could take my dogs and quarantine them
whether they were up-to-date on their rabies or not. Possibly I could
quarantine them at home, but they *could* take them.

With this information, I asked my vet about it, who said this was true. I
told her in that case, I was going to do rabies every three years even if
the law said every year. She did not argue with me.

Barb, I think you were talking about a 6 mo. old puppy? I would definately
vaccinate the puppy against rabies. I have also read that you should
revaccinate a puppy at one year, and then every three years for rabies. I
had no hesitation for vaccinating my puppy. I think they do need to be
vaccinated against rabies, even if it is highly unlikely they could be
bitten. There's always a chance a bat could bite them, or something could
get in your yard. I follow Dr. Jean Dodds' vaccination protocol for my
dogs.
