I have been a member of this list for some years and have seldom
contributed. I held my tongue and replied privately when the subject of
difficulties of membership for pet owners in the American CKCSC club and
its regional affiliates was discussed a week ago. Now it has come up again
and I would like to ask if there is any valid evidence that the 1998 vote
of the CKCSC to reject becoming the parent club for AKC was determined by
pet owners and not breeders? I believe the ballots were secret. At the
time I was an Associate member of CKCSC and of course had no vote. I have
heard it said many times that the reason for the membership restrictions in
ACKCSC stems from that vote. My two dogs (soon to be three) are dual
registered (one also CKC registered) and are shown both in CKCSC and AKC
all-breed shows. I would join AKCSC and Cavaliers of Puget Sound but not
under the onus of two sponsors and kennel visits (for ACKCSC). Further it
seems evident to everyone from what has been said already on this list that
unless you are a breeder you are not welcome as a voting member in the
AKCSC or its affiliates. And even if you are an exhibitor you have no right
to have any vote on breed standards. One wonders how many list members
expressing such views started out as pet owners, then started showing and
finally became breeders. Does acquiring a kennel name and breeding one or
two litters entitle you to a vote on breed standards? If not, then how many
litters and how many years? How many championships? Last year at the
Spokane AKC Memorial Day show I made the mistake of asking two exhibitors
if they were going to attend the Robert Smith Memorial Show in Olympia.
>From the reaction I got I might as well have asked if they were going to
commit criminal acts. I later learned they were AKC only breeders. But to
come back to the point, it seems this animosity between breeders and pet
owners stems from the 1998 vote in CKCSC. Who can provide evidence that pet
owners and not breeders determined the outcome of that vote?
