I know I'm way behind on this thread, but just got home and want to jump in
with another perspective. I fully agree with Barb about not want to
vaccinate for Rabies just because the govt. tells me to ( I feel the same way
about licensing too--but that's another tale). BUT - I now make sure my dogs
are all current (or have titers that show their still have immunity from
previous shots). Why?
We had one friend who was in the yard with his 4 mo. old puppy when a
bat swooped down, started flopping on the ground, and wound up biting the
puppy. Bat was rabid -- puppy had no Rabies shot -- puppy was put down.
Last year, a family not too far from us had sheep in a pasture that
were in contact with the family dogs...one sheep died from rabies and the
only reason the one dog survived was because she had current shots -- and
needed a booster.
Both animals were in their yards -- I'd rather have my dogs alive than
die from Rabies...so I take the big risk associated with the vaccination. But
we live in a very high rabies area.
It's still a tough call!
