We live in an area that hosts very large ant colonies; i.e. in large ant
hills about the yard.

I use a product called "Bug-Be-Gone" made by Green Cross. It can be found,
at least around here, exclusively at farm co-op stores.

This stuff can be harmful to children and pets, so I put an over-sized x-pen
around the ant hill, covered (with wire mess) until the stuff does its job,
usually about two or three days. After the treatment, thoroughly soak the
soil, even turn it over with a shovel, and leave it for another day or so.
Rain helps also. Then you can remove the x-pen and all is well. This stuff
is absolutely murder on ants; pun intended. It also works on ear-wigs,
grubs, termites and other creepy crawly things. It has yet to fail to do
the job and some of the ant hills have been two feet in diameter.

Following the instructions carefully, it can also be used indoors around ant
collection areas.

Remember, THIS STUFF CAN BE HARMFUL TO CHILDREN AND PETS, it should also not
be used near ornamental fish ponds, so be extremely careful how it is used.
