I've been following the really passionate posts regarding the issue of AKC -vs- CKCSC and, believe me, I can understand why everyone feels so passionate about this subject but it sort of got me wondering......what do people feel the reason is for the horrendous change in the status of Cavaliers over the past several years. What I mean by status is that IMO they went from being what one might call an elite dog in the US to one that is possibly in the top few of puppy mill breeds. So why did that happen when it happened? In Canada as well things have changed although on a much lesser scale I think but we do now have backyard breeders right on our doorsteps. I recently had a call from some folks who had been on a waiting list for a pup from me but decided not to wait. They wanted to visit anyway with their new pup so of course that was OK with me. After more discussion with them I realized they were getting themselves into a horrible situation so I offered them my show quality boy for pet price on a neuter contract in order to give them an option which may prompt them not to buy the other one. I hated to do it but I felt if it is not so easy for these breeders to sell their pups maybe they will quit. They had told these people that they were getting the pick of the litter because it was the only one in the litter without a heart murmur. Of course when they wrote to say they would not be taking the pup as they (the breeders) had been unable to provide the health certificates which they had said they had, the response was what one might expect "well, we can't refund your deposit because they're older now and not so cute so will be harder to sell." They were 7 weeks by that time. What a heartbreaking situation this has all turned into. Sorry for rambling....it just gets to me sometimes.
