Myra, Thank you for saying what I have been thinking and struggling with right now. I can't decide on who to run on and who to place between two black & tan boys almost 11 weeks. They are from 3 generation+, heart clear lines of which some dogs are AKC,Can.Eng.&CKCSC,USA Champions who are long living dogs. They both have short backs, medium bone, excellent temperaments, very nice structure, and sound movement. The difficulty is one head looks like his fathers when he was a puppy with a tapered muzzle that turned out so soft and melting as an adult but this puppy has a slight overbite, and a little short in leg. The other boy has a lovely square head, shorter muzzle, correct bite and better balance. I have never bred a square looking head before so I don't know how it could turn out. I am keeping a beautiful ruby girl who has her fathers head already, lovely cushion, etc. as my show prospect. In deed, there is so much more than just health when evaluating who to keep in a breed program and who might make a difference in the health and type of the wholecolors which are always challenging!
I wish that those who feel as passionate about their point of view on this list that are members of CKCSC,USA and dual registered to please offer your solutions personally at the National Specialty meeting in Atlanta. For those that can't attend, then write a letter but let your views be known to those that can be effective in creating positive change for the betterment of the breed! If we are always looking at the glass half empty then we won't be positive change agents trying to improve this lovely breed and educating those that are uninformed and willing to learn. I am really getting tired of people digging up the past, making incorrect assumptions and in general showing a negative attitude about allowing AKC dogs into the old club. We need unity for the betterment of the breed and to do that everyone in a position to guide change needs to put their ego aside...it is about principles over personalities. I would personally like it if the ban of the original CKCSC,USA breeders who started the ACKCSC was dropped and we started working together holding joint shows, judging seminars, health clinics, etc. to educate anyone interested in protecting and improving the cavalier king charles spaniel. It takes emotional maturity, and a positive attitude to go beyond pointing fingers, and assigning blame for puppymills, backyard breeders, auctions, pet store sales, and uninformed pet owners that most often prefer to impulse buy creating a market for puppymills and backyard breeders. Think of all the good that could come if we used a mediator (if that is what it takes) for both clubs to work together to share budgets to use psa's for a advertising and direct mail campaign which includes web sites to direct sales away from unethical breeders who are not interested in the suggested protocol for improving the MVD in cavaliers, and have a joint show together, perhaps, once a year with a variety of seminars and health clinics available for pet owners and breeders. There have been many good suggestions by many people on this list that are obviously passionate about the well being of our beloved breed. I am going to speak up at the general meeting in June, won't you please join me in offering positive solutions for the betterment of our dogs?
