I just know that many of you are waiting with bated breath (or baited breath in order to keep this doggy) to hear about the World Grits Festival that was held yesterday in St. George, SC - the Grits Capital of the World!
My husband and I traveled the 17 miles to St. George for the festival and found that there were people from as far away as Mississippi in attendance. What an event! A parade, carnival rides, arts and crafts booths (even some jewelry made from dried grits!), foot stompin' music, etc. And what a selection of culinary delights! There were hot DOGS, corn DOGS, elephant ears, fried oreos (huh? I couldn't even bring myself to find out what this was all about!), fresh squeezed lemonade, and of course - grits! Now, I have only lived in South Carolina for 30 years (since I was just a mere child *G*) so I am not considered by natives to be as southern as I like to think I am. My Yankee heritage must shine through as when I was offered my choice of white or yellow grits. I asked what was the difference - and I was told, as the server rolled her eyes heavenward - the color! Ah well, having been embarrassed in front of a handful of cheerful people I took the yellow since I have only cooked white at home. A good choice, as would have been the white. Nuthin' could be finer than fried fish and grits in Carolina.......(except my favorite shrimp and grits, of course). Remember - the World Grits Festival takes place every year at this time - so pencil it in your calendars and plan a trip to this little part of heaven next year! You won't regret it!
