Dear Hilarie,
Being that you are fairly new to Florida, I want to warn you about Bufo
marinus Toads. I know they are in Tampa and surrounding areas, know they
travel and have spread quite a bit here in Miami so wouldn't be surprised to
have them show up there someday as Sarasota is close to Tampa..they were
introduced in Florida to kill insects in sugarcane fields and other area (see
web site below)..so please be careful when seeing toads...these can kill with
just a lick or sniff on the sacs on their necks. I don't have them in my
area of Miami (but am ever watchful as they DO spread) but Karen Bernstein,
just about 4 miles away has mulitudes of them starting about this time of
year. As she has had dogs in Intensive Care, almost losing them with slight
contact, she can tell you the dangers. She walks the dogs with weapons and
strong flashlights in Toad TIme...never letting them out of her sight. If
you see toads and the frothing, rinse mouth FROM THE SIDE with running water
from hose (trying not to allow them to swallow even a small bit). And get
medical check. They are out between sunrise and sunset mainly. Here is a
web site to read more.
