Poodle Receives Kidney Transplant
Organ From Mother Dog First In State

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- A 6-month-old poodle named Benji is the proud survivor
of the first dog kidney transplant in Florida. Benji received the kidney
from his mother. The procedure is one of only a few dozen performed on dogs
in the United States. A University of Florida assistant professor and
small-animal surgeon operated on the poodle.
Benji is now resting at home with his mom, Snowstar, and their family, Alan
and Barbara Bland. Dr. Jeff Slade of the Sebastian Animal Hospital and Bird
Clinic discovered Benji's kidneys were deformed after conducting a blood
test. Benji was seeing the vet for a planned neutering.
The operation for Benji and Snowstar cost $4,300.
