Hi Jeanie,

Thank you for the encouragement! I WILL try to
remember that. My response to this thread comes out
of reading every book on showing that I can get my
hands on, watching videos, attending shows to observe,
going to handling classes, and doing short training
sessions with Teddy at home. Since my focus is on
trying to learn handling, my brain magnifies the
importance of that. And of course, if you are reading
a book on handling, it will tell you handling is
everything.

Sometimes at handling classes I feel like such a
clumsy oaf, and fear that I will ruin Teddy. Then
there are times when he does exactly what he should
and I am so proud of him. He is such a happy,
confident little guy. He gets so excited to be at
handling class that he is terribly distracted by every
little noise or movement and wants to rush over to
investigate. He especially loves to sniff the big
dogs. He thinks that when we gait down and back or go
around, that it's his chance to see all the big dogs
waiting their turn. He's much more interested in the
treat the instructor has waiting for him after the
down and back than paying attention to staying with
me. Or, he thinks it's a race, and if I speed up to
keep up with him, he breaks into a gallop. I find
myself thinking, if I turned him over to a pro, he'd
be in shape in no time, or if I did more training at
home, he'd do better. And then I worry that I could
all too easily train his exhuberance right out of him.

There you have it. The inner workings of a novice
trying to figure all this out.
