Hi, Glenn,
While I understand how you might feel this way, I think that for some
of us there are good reasons for this rule. For instance, I am an
attorney. Sometimes I answer questions for the folks on this list that
are meant to be general, but not individualized advice relating to legal
issues. Out of the context of the discussion my thoughts might be taken
as specific advice and an individual relying upon it might find it to be
wrong for them, inadequate or otherwise not applicable. I don't write
posts with considered legal argument, and certainly am not licensed to
practice in other countries. So, a forwarded post from me taken out of
context could do more harm than good.
On another list, my husband and I answered a call for comments on a
proposition put forth by the AKC. We took some time in writing this
post, but it again was not considered legal argument as we are
accustomed to it. We had a request to have it reprinted in a canine
publication which we approved only after we added a disclaimer to it
stating just that point.
Similarly, there are those on this list (and I am not one of them) who
have been breeders for many, many years. Their considerable knowledge
base might be extremely helpful in assisting another person with a
problem; but I don't think that those posts are meant to be taken as
differential diagnosis and treatment by email. Again, those out of
context posts might do more harm than good.
I don't remember refusing a request to forward an email of my own, but I
have, from time to time, asked that something be added to it so that it
could stand on its own and also not be thought to be anything more than
my own opinion.
So, I am grateful for the copyright laws and list policy which allows me
to control publication of my words in order to allow me to know that
they are properly taken.
Best,
Suze
