Not at all, Myra.

On rare occasions I have requested the right to purchase a puppy from a
litter my dog has sired, but usually not. When a bitch owner comes to me to
inquire about using one of my dogs, I have the following requirements: The
bitch must have had a vaginal smear done recently and be found to be free of
transmittable infection. Documentation of testing must be up to date and
clear for inheritable diseases. The stud fee is payable up front. If the
bitch has only one pup or no pups, a repeat breeding will be offered.

One more stipulation which will be taken into consideration is the general
quality of the bitch and the integrity of her owner. I want to feel secure
in the knowledge that my stud dog's pups will be properly cared for in every
respect.

After all of these requirements are met, I think that the owner of the bitch
has the right to make decisions regarding their litter. The owner of the
sperm donor should not be able to control a responsible person's litter to
the extent this person seems to want to do. Once they are allowed to breed
to my dog, the litter is theirs unless previously decided otherwise.

In my opinion, you did the smart as well as the right thing in backing off.
However, did you speak to them about your concerns and try to reach a
compromise? If you really like that dog for your bitch more than any other,
it would be worth the effort to try.
