Actually a spay is considered a serious abdominal surgery as it is the ecquivalent of a human abdominal hysterectomy. They are just so routine, that people forget that they really are a major surgery. However, most bitches do not show lots of signs of discomfort following a spay, so pain meds are usually not used. Rimadyl is used primarily for long term pain associated with arthritis and hip dysplasia.
