Here is what Lynda Jenkins responded to me.
Dear Terrie,
Thanks for writing! I can understand that Cavalier breeders are upset
about the Toy Cavalier Spaniel. But it was not anyone's intention to represent
them as being Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in any way. They are a totally
seperate breed altogether. I am not the originator of the Toy Cavalier Spaniel,
just the first person to put them on my website. We love the looks and
temperament of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but my husband is disabled,
and a larger dog does not fit well on his lap in a wheelchair. So when I heard
about the smaller cavalier type dogs we were thrilled, as now my husband could
have a companion that he liked too. When we bought our Toy Cavalier Spaniel
from another breeder, we were so taken with her that we wanted more. That is
how we got started with the Toys. We did not do it for a money making scheme or
any other reason than we love these
little dogs! All new breeds started somewhere and people with new breeds have
always had to endure alot to get where they have gotten. There have been
several new dog breeds introduced in the last few years and many new cat
breeds. Usually these are created because everyone likes something different!
That is what make life interesting. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in it's
present form would not be around today if it was not for Roswell Eldridrge who
redeveloped the breed. Every breed had a start somewhere. We wanted to do
things right, so we researched on how to start a new breed and have gotten help
from some very nice people. In order to start a new breed, a breed club must be
formed with a show standard and code of ethics and it's own registry. After the
breed has consistant type for several generations then they can apply for rare
breed show status with the rare breed associations. We also require that any
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that are in the background be heart and eye
clear. We do not require OFA as the smaller dogs so far have not had any hip
problems, but if
any ever show up then it will be required too. Since the Toy Cavalier Spaniels
are a different breed, the standard is different and more colors are allowed.
As I said before, we are not trying to represent these dogs as being Cavalier
King Charles Spaniels, mislead or offend people in any way, if you have gotten
that impression then I am sorry.
Take care & God Bless,
Lynda
