Dear Lynn,

The chocolate gene came through Ttiweh originally as Amice Pitt used many
different breeds when she was trying to get the long nose back. Purebred
chocolate Cavaliers are always Chocolate & Tan or Chocolate Tri as they are
pure for the tan points as well. At one time, when I was studying the
inheritance mode, I had several chocolates. After I learned all I wanted
about that, I worked on breeding the color out of our lines. At this point,
I only have one, a very pretty Chocolate Tri named Tootsie Roll. In my
breedings, I am working to not have any chocolates and to clear out the gene
entirely. It will probably pop up for someone else as it is in the longevity
lines. Sort of like "rough coat" has done, but chocolate is not a health
problem thankfully. Usually, it is seen as a Blenheim with putty nose and
light eyes, sort of a Brittany look.

I don't know of any sables in the foundation lines although there were roans
and black & whites-- even china blue eyes. Both of these are dominant colors
so they were easy to drop. The blue eyes would be recessive and may recur.
The recessives like chocolate, which is recessive to all other colors
including red, are much more difficult to clear, but not impossible.
All the best,
Susan Cochran
