Hi Suze, I have also heard of dogs being "freed" (by Activists) from their crates and stolen. The last time I have heard of this freeing was 20 years ago at at Philadelphia KC show. (it was also reported that anitfreeze was being put into the water bowls in the crates. ) It caused a mass hyteria. And the only dog that comes to mind being stolen (in this area)was a pug puppy from Staten Island KC Breed show, maybe 2 years ago (not quite sure of the date). The puppy was left in an ex pen.
For the most part (most) agiltiy trials are not attented much by specatators and the exhibitors set up a "tent city" sort of atmosphere. I agree that our dogs are always at risk of being stolen even in our own back yards. But I do not feel that our dogs are at danger under our own tents at an agility trial.
