Thanks, Lynn,
My vet's reaction today when I told her about the two posts was "can
you get them for me? I've been waiting for this to happen!". She cannot
fathom why anyone would want to use something that stayed in the body
that long. We do use monthly heartguard plus; that is about as wild and
crazy as we get. Both my vet and I concur that unless a medication has
been around a good many years, we don't use it unless it is life
threatening and no alternative.
I have seen all the studies on ivermectin over the years and believe
that they have solved the problems even in collie breeds. Ivermectin is
VERY dose sensitive. I also think it is the safest and best wormer on
the market.
For those who are thinking of nosodes for heartworm.......my vet has
treated a number of dogs this year for heartworm who were on nosodes.
She doesn't believe that this particular nosode works well enough. (She
is not against all nosodes, but having seen enough sick dogs doesn't
like this one.)
Our vet doesn't recommend using any heartworm meds just prior to
breeding and throughout lactation. So, I basically keep the pregnant
girls inside as much as possible when the mesquitoes are worst (dusk and
dawn). So far, we have had no problems.

The "plus" part of Heartguard is a mild form of a Nemex wormer and I
never have any worms in our dogs......that is a nice thing.

But we don't give this stuff to pups or pregnant or lactating
bitches......our philosophy is "less is more". I am ever so careful
then to make sure that they are clean, checked for ticks,
etc...........easy to do as I breed so infrequently.

Best,

Suze
