Rosanne, it is the hybrid vigor thing working here. They probably would be pretty healthy genetically as very few genetic defects would be common to both breeds-- possible but not probable. Of course, they will not breed true for type or anything like that.
Cross two highly inbred lines and the result is a vastly superior heterozygote-- at least for the first generation. This is done routinely in livestock such as cattle and swine as well as plants, i.e., hybrid flowers and vegetables. The kicker is that hybrid vigor is for the F1 generation only. They do not breed true for type or health in the generations after that first crossbreeding. Anyone who wants a "Bengie" type dog would love one of these. However, as dog breeding goes, it is self defeating.
