I'd always assumed that my oldest Lab was alpha (after me), and it seems true, especially now that she's gone. She was the one that everyone wanted to play with, and the noisiest barker. And all my other dogs were REALLY lost after she died. My 6 year old male (neutered) Cavalier seems to have taken over her role now, though, as he's the one who mostly instigates play, and now rules the backyard. He's also the one who misses the old girl the most. It's true, though, that it may be hard to tell who is alpha, especially when you have well-mannered, well socialized house dogs! Mine just want to be on the couch though, with no particular motivation other than comfort in mind!
