Use whatever gets her attention, Jackie - it doesn't have to be food! Actually, many dogs do BETTER when it is something NOT food - A favorite (small) toy, a ball, a squeaker, a clicker - all are ok in the conformation ring -
You might teach the 'stand' command - and use a hand signal as you teach it! As you work with your pup, you can give oral commands and hand signals as you 'present' your dog --- on the down & back as well as other times in the ring - To get your dog to slow / stop before getting to the judge - I was taught to turn, myself, shortly before we get to where I want my dog to stop - I turn so that I am FACING the dog - my back to the judge - and I can give hand / verbal commands.
