Hi Glenn -
You & I must've talked to the same breeders! When I went looking 4+
years ago I could not find ONE breeder who would sell outright to me. I
have shown & bred Bernese Mountain Dogs over 15 years & had a Shih Tzu
at the same time (replaced her with Cavalier), & Australian Shepherds
prior to the Bernese, so I wasn't a newcomer to showing & breeding. I
have a good reputation with my puppy buyers & know any one (all) of them
would "recommend" me (but I do sell to newbies so who'd listen to them?
LOL)... But... In Bernese there is a LOT of co-owning - at least out
west - (Joan R. is it the same out east?) so being new to the breed &
co-owning was not a huge issue to me. I knew I had to be able to get
along with who I chose as my breeder in order for it to work, & am very
happy with who I am dealing with.
By the way - yes, when I sold my first litter (2 pups) they were
co-owned, but it was a little different situation... They went to a
friend who wanted to co-own & payed a much reduced price in return. We
have since neutered one of those pups & placed him in a great pet
home... (No co-own there!) The other? She's gathered her first 2 points
towards her AKC championship!
I'm finding the talk about co-owning very interesting & it's making
me rethink co-owning (when I have pups) in the future. I know *I'd* like
to outright own any dog I have, & I feel if I trust someone enough to
place a dog in their home I should trust them completely...
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Food for thought...
Candy Roper - still very happy with my current co-own. It's going just
fine, thank you!
