Dear Brigitte:

We have a "general" reply letter to puppy inquiries. It provides info
about us, our breeding practices, price of puppy, if available, email
addresses to the cavalier lists, email address to our National Club
Website, etc., etc.

In responding about specifics, I would go with a gut feeling and either
preface my letter with yes/no we have/don't have puppies available or
expected in the near future, followed by the content of the general letter.
At least you've then provided some education. I have learned that not
everyone is good at representing themselves in print or on a machine and
give benefit of doubt by responding respectfully to ALL of them. If after
reading your initial letter, they still come back, then you are at stage
two, which would require a physical meeting (especially if you have
misgivings at all about stage one :)) Obviously, with the years of
experience you have, you will be able to figure out if this person is just
"simple" (said respectfully) and really likes this breed and just wants a
puppy or is a "I'm sure you don't care and I don't give a care - just want
one of y'er dogs so I can make some money" kind of person.
