Let me preclude this with, use at your own risk, I am not a veterinarian. I have used this to euthanize homozygous merle puppies, or deformed pups with little chance of survival, or those in severe pain and distress. Ether can be purchased as Quick Start at an automotive or farm supply place. It is used as a starting aid ofr deisel engines in a cold climate. The proper use of ether for ethanizing. I live miles from town and bitches don't always whelp in the day or when the roads are clear. I have been snowed in for several days, and I would only do this on very young puppies. It does work and is as humane as can be. I lul the puppy to sleep on a warm towel, they are as content as the situation allows. I soak some paper towels with ether, it comes in a spray can. Place in a coffee can, with a tight fitting lid. Place sleeping pup in on towels, add some more soaked towels to the top, and afix lid. Puppy rarely even wakes when placed in the can. They just go deeper and deeper asleep untill they stop breathing. I verify they are dead and bury them out in the back under the ferns. It is a special place where all my animals will eventually go. Sometimes the circle of life is a very small one but all life deserves respect and kindness. There are many who might veiw me as cruel or uncaring. Well I have taken dogs in to be euthanized by a vet. They are far more traumatized by the vets clinic then they ever would be at home. My vet will come out and euthanize my older animals at home.
